MPs call for tax cuts to help aid the squeezed middle

Tax cuts have to be funded, we also need to be clear on what delivers the best bang for the buck

Steve Barclay. Tory backbencher

He said the tax burden had soared under the previous Labour government, and urged Chancellor George Osborne to unveil tax cuts in his autumn statement to MPs next month.

He wrote: “Britain’s tax burden is £221billion higher than when Tony Blair entered Downing Street.

“At 38 per cent of GDP, it’s the highest in the rich world outside Europe. The Autumn Statement is the time to be bold, not to play safe.”

He also attacked the Lib Dems for wanting to hit anyone earning more than £50,000 with a wealth tax.

Mr Raab said: “That would be an attack on the middle classes, who already foot 56 per cent of the tax bill.”
