Cameron faces Tory revolt over human rights laws

Foreign criminals must be banned from using European human rights laws to avoid deportation, MPs will demand on Thursday Photo: ALAMY By James Kirkup, Political Editor

Foreign criminals must be banned from using European human rights laws to avoid deportation, MPs will demand on Thursday as David Cameron faces one of the biggest rebellions of his premiership.

Almost 100 Conservative MPs will push the Prime Minister to curb the power of judges to block deportation when foreign criminals have a family link to Britain.

The prospect of such a large backlash increased the pressure on Downing Street to do a deal with the back benches as Tories tried to blame the Liberal Democrats for blocking a compromise.

Senior Conservatives on Wednesday sought to present a tougher line on human rights, as Theresa May, the Home Secretary, proposed a new law to allow terrorist suspects to be stripped of their British citizenship even if it left them stateless.

Chris Grayling, the Justice Secretary, also pledged to resist “European law mission creep”.

Cameron’s economic medicine is working – Tories should support him

28 Jan 2014

Meanwhile, Mr Cameron signalled he was increasingly frustrated by the Lib Dems and had no wish to repeat their partnership after the next election, saying: “I’m not looking for another coalition, I’ve done coalition, I’ve got the T-shirt.”

MPs will debate the Immigration Bill on Thursday, and more than 40 Tories could defy Mr Cameron by backing a demand to reinstate rules preventing Romanians and Bulgarians working in the UK.

Although support for a rebel amendment on the issue was said to be fading, the row over foreign criminals continued.

A total of 104 MPs have backed an amendment to restrict the ability of foreign criminals to invoke Article Eight of the European Convention on Human Rights – which gives the right to a family life – when contesting deportation.

Ministers insist that the amendment, tabled by Dominic Raab, a backbencher, is impractical and unnecessary because the Immigration Bill itself contains measures to restrict Article Eight cases. To avert a major revolt, ministers were on Wednesday night considering trying to prevent Mr Raab’s amendment coming to a vote.

The Home Office has tabled dozens of amendments to the Bill and made changes to the debate timetable.

On Wednesday Mr Cameron warned his MPs that they risked delaying the Immigration Bill, which overhauls rules dealing with migrants’ access to public services and makes it harder for illegal immigrants to get bank accounts and driving licences.

One Cabinet minister told The Telegraph: “I have a lot of time for what Dominic is trying to do, but No 10 isn’t quite there yet.”

On Wednesday night a Downing Street source insisted Mr Cameron had “great sympathy” for Mr Raab’s objectives, but suggested that the Lib Dems were resisting tougher deportation rules.

Conservative ministers also want to back an amendment that would allow the Government to intervene if European migration levels become “excessive”. The Lib Dems were refusing, arguing it was potentially illegal under EU law.

One potential deal would see the parties voting on different sides to symbolise the growing distance between the two parties.

Tory MPs pile more pressure on David Cameron to extend border controls on migrants

People are quite rightly concerned about whether public services can cope, about what benefits they will claim and about the number of jobs they will take.

Nigel Mills, the MP for Amber Valley in Derbyshire

Nigel Mills, the MP for Amber Valley in Derbyshire, is pushing for the amendment to the Immigration Bill, and last night he warned the economy "cannot cope" with another large influx of migrants.

"The Government is putting through a very worthwhile Immigration Bill which introduces a number of measures most people concerned about immigration will welcome," he told the Daily Mail.

"But what we don’t have are any measures on Romanian and Bulgarian migrants, which is what people mention if you ask them about immigration.

"Quite rightly, people want to know what will happen from January. The unofficial forecast would mean a quarter of a million people coming here over the next five years.

"People are quite rightly concerned about whether public services can cope, about what benefits they will claim and about the number of jobs they will take."

Yesterday business tycoon Paul Sykes backed the Daily Express crusade, as he vowed to do "whatever it takes" to ensure Eurosceptic Ukip win next year's European elections.

Dear All

Not a bubble just facts, another fact is that the Quisling Cameron will let us have a referendum but we will never get out, unless...

Cameron has been open in his willingness to collaborate with the EU forces. Some of you may recall that the prime minister admitted in an interview with the Spanish newspaper El Pais last April that he would not take Britain out of the EU just because a referendum result was a vote to get Out.

I’ll remind you of the exchange. The reporter from El Pais asked Cameron, if in the case of a victory in the referendum for the "out" vote: "Would you be willing to leave the Union?" Cameron’s reply was: "I would not".

The interview was circulated at the European Commission. It was further confirmation to the EU elite that Cameron is one of them. He is a collaborator, along with Ed, Nick and the rest of the 'Common Purpose' traitors

The question is, just what will it take?

Cameron shouldn't require any further pressure to do what is right ! He should already be doing everything he can to defend this country and her people.

But Cameron doesn't do anything for this country ! He should go asap., and stand aside for someone who cares to take over.

Pegasus216 12:54pm ...sorry to burst your bubble but it took 10yrs to get rid of Qatada, so do you honestly think that they will deport the unemployed immigrant? Not a chance in a million. We are led by traitors. Any other country would have them all with their heads on spikes!

MP's can 'urge' all they want ... It seems things are 'set in stone' and no amount of discussion or urging is going to change the situation! It appears to me that Britain cannot change the rules unless the EU high command approves first. Our bright minded politicians of the time did not foresee this and make the changes 'before' they signed Britain away to the illiterate and miscreants that are allowed to 'flood in' and take what they can. The commonwealth and most countries (including Spain) laugh and toy with us now because we are weak and toothless toward helping our own people - A shameful situation.

The only way out is UKIP the other 3 main parties are rubbing their hands wondering when the next EU back hander is coming. Soon there will be more foreigners living in Britain than Brits because most of them if they have any sense will leave.

Man who threatened to kill Cameron had stun gun, hammers, knives and Samurai sword

Police found a cache of weapons including a 950,000 volt stun gun in the car of a man who said he was on his way to kill the Prime Minister, a court has heard.

Irfaq Naz, 34, also had hammers, kitchen knives, a machete, an unsheathed Samurai sword and masking tape in his Vauxhall Astra when he was stopped in July after going the wrong way down a north London street.

Officers later searched his home in Middlesbrough and found the Downing Street postcode and the names of other prominent political figures.

The taxi driver was detained under the Mental Health Act, and last month admitted possessing a prohibited weapon, three counts of possessing an offensive weapon, seven counts of having a bladed article and dangerous driving.

Judge Simon Bourne-Arton, the Recorder of Middlesbrough, imposed a hospital order with a restriction order meaning Naz can only be released with the permission of the Home Secretary.

Teesside Crown Court heard how he drove from Middlesbrough to London in the early hours of July 16 and by 4am had reached Kentish Town.

He drove his blue Vauxhall Astra the wrong way down Camden High Street, a one-way street, for three-quarters of a mile, causing oncoming traffic to take evasive action.

Police were called and tried to stop his car, but he carried on until he got caught in a jam at the junction with Euston Road.

Concerned he might attempt to drive on, officers smashed their way into his car and detained him.

''It was then that the defendant stated that he was on his way to kill the Prime Minister, David Cameron,'' Nick Dry, prosecuting, said.

''He was found to have a knuckleduster in his shirt pocket and an 18 inch hunting knife in the waistband of his trousers.''

Police were concerned about his behaviour and found he had previously spent a month at Roseberry Park Hospital, Middlesbrough, as a mental health patient.

Mr Dry added: ''A search of his vehicle revealed other weapons.

''In the driver's door panel were three eight-inch kitchen knives.

''Between the driver's seat and door was a samurai sword, its sheath found nearby in the passenger foot well.

''From the rear seat officers recovered a claw hammer, a lump hammer and an axe which were in a plastic bag that also contained masking tape.

''In the boot they found a machete and a stun gun, shaped as a knuckleduster.

''That device, a Blast Knuckles 950,000 volt stun gun, was found to be in working order and a prohibited weapon.''

Naz, of Finsbury Street, Middlesbrough, also had four mobile phones and £1,200 in cash in the car.

Dr Pratish Thakkar, a consultant psychiatrist, diagnosed paranoid schnizophrenia and said he posed a significant risk to others having acted on his delusions.

Naz, whose brother was in the public gallery, sat in the dock flanked by four mental health workers.

He will reside at Roseberry Park Hospital, where he has previously been treated.

Peter Wishlade, defending, said: ''It is a tragedy, to put it bluntly, that this has happened to this family.

''Mr Naz, when he is taking his medication, is perfectly calm, rational, articulate and easy to talk to, but unfortunately when not, he is inclined to delusions and regrettably he has endeavoured to carry them out.''

The judge felt his delusions, which included a desire to kill a world leader, posed a serious risk to the public.

Naz also believed the Mayor of Middlesbrough Ray Mallon, and others in the community, were going to kill him.

The judge disqualified him from driving for three years and ordered the weapons be destroyed.

Outside court, Steven Orange, the district crown prosecutor for CPS Durham Tees, said: ''In the weeks before this incident Naz failed to take his medication which as a result has led to him having delusions.

''At the time of this incident he was therefore suffering from a major mental illness and his behaviour was undoubtedly influenced by the delusions he was having.

''His disorder will need psychological treatment in order to ensure compliance with medication and reduce the risk of him acting upon his delusions in the future.''

Mr Orange added: ''It should be recognised that the sentence in this case is more about securing appropriate treatment for a man with significant mental health issues than punishment.''
