Our £300,000 bill for asylum seekers to stay at luxury hotel

Council leader Matthew Colledge said: “To be given less than 48 hours’ notice of the imposition of a large contingent of asylum seekers is frankly ludicrous.

“It is intensely irritating that, as council leader, I have had no opportunity to influence the decision at all. I recognise some asylum seekers are escaping from appalling situations but schools and GPs’ surgeries are already full.”

The Labour group leader David Acton agreed. He said: “This is an appalling situation, an absolute shambles and unacceptable.”

A spokesman for Serco said yesterday: “We are currently using the Amblehurst Hotel to temporarily accommodate a number of asylum seekers.

“In due course, these people will be found further housing throughout the North-west of England pending the outcome of reviews into their eligibility to claim asylum.”

'Armed' crook dressed in onesie tries and fails to rob a hotel

PAAn armed crook attempted to rob a hotel - while dressed in a red ONESIE.

The distinctively-dressed man burst into the reception area and threatened staff with what is thought to have been an imitation firearm.

The colourful intruder then struck an employee across the face before fleeing empty-handed.

The member of staff who was attacked suffered minor injuries.

The drama unfolded at the Mercure Hotel in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, at around 5.20am on Monday.

Police are investigating the attempted robbery.

Det Sgt Jason Rusbridge told the Welwyn Hatfield Times: "We have a team of detectives investigating this incident however I would like to issue an urgent appeal to anyone who saw this man wearing this distinctive red all in one suit, either before or after the offence took place.

"I'd also appeal to anyone in the Hatfield area who may know someone who owns this item of clothing and matches the description of the offender.

"If you have any information about this incident, please call police as soon as possible."

The crook is thought to have escaped on a mountain bike.

He was around 6ft tall, slim and is thought to be in his 20s.
