MPs to quiz energy chiefs on price hikes

I think his heart was in the right place but his head had gone walkabout

John Major, former Conservative Prime Minister

Npower this week became the third of the Big Six suppliers to hit millions of households with a massive 10.4 per cent hike, adding around £104 to average bills.

It followed SSE and British Gas which both hit customers with “crippling” rises.

Mark Todd, director of energyhelpline.com, last night welcomed the Westminster committee’s move.

He said: “The public need to understand the reasons behind these crippling increases.

“The MPs really need to dig deep to find out what is going on and get some answers, the public want answers and these businesses need to give credible explanations.

“People don’t want excuses, what they want to know is what is being done to bring prices down instead of seeing them going up and up.”

Sir John said it was not acceptable to see energy prices rocketing by up to 10 per cent when wholesale costs are rising by only four per cent.

He said: “I do not regard that as acceptable at all by the energy companies.

“It ought not to be acceptable to anyone, that many people are going to have to chose between keeping warm and eating.
