Queen and Duke of Edinburgh take in view from The Shard

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh are given a bird's eye view of London from the top of The Shard, during a visit to the tallest building in Western Europe 2:45PM GMT 21 Nov 2013

The Queen asked for a bird's eye view of Buckingham Palace as she looked across London's skyline from the top of The Shard today.

The Queen went up western Europe's tallest building, standing at 1,016ft high, with the Duke of Edinburgh as the royal couple visited the London borough of Southwark today.

The royal couple peered through an interactive telescope on the landmark's 69th floor, before braving the cold weather on the 800ft high open-air viewing gallery of the building at London Bridge.

Dressed in a matching purple coat and hat, the Queen remarked that St Paul's Cathedral looked "quite small" as she walked around the 360 degree gallery, known as The View.

"It's interesting, the different views and how people can see their houses," she said.

Queen and Duke of Edinburgh visit Sussex fishery

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh visit West Quay Fisheries in East Sussex where they come face-to-face with the catch of the day and many other varieties of fish caught off the Sussex coast. 7:11PM GMT 31 Oct 2013

The royal couple were shown more than 40 varieties of fish caught off the Sussex coast by a local fleet during their tour of the West Quay Fisheries, which has been open for almost 40 years.

Crab, lobsters, monk fish, conger eel and squid were all displayed on ice for the Queen and Philip to inspect at the family-run fish company in Newhaven, East Sussex.

The firm, based on the quayside of the River Ouse, sells fish to shops, restaurants as well as at an on-site shop direct to the public.

Shop manager Kerry Bickerstaff, 37, who has worked at the firm for 20 years, said: "It's an honour. We had the Duke of Kent about 10 years ago but I have never met the Queen before. It's great news for the community to have her here."
