Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes is to adapt Princess Michael of Kent's novel for television
Lord Fellowes has made a dearly held wish come true for his old friend Princess Michael of Kent.
Almost three years after she told me that she was hoping the creator of Downton Abbey would work his magic on The Serpent and the Moon, her historical novel about royal love in Renaissance France, he has agreed to turn it into a television series.
The question apparently was never whether Fellowes would adapt it, but when. “He has been working his way through a long list of commitments,” a friend of the writer tells me. “He has one more American television job to complete and then it’s the next up.”
Early in 2011, the princess’s novel was picked up by a producer and optioned as an eight-part television series with an outline that Marie-Christine, the wife of Prince Michael, a cousin of the Queen, wrote herself.
“The agents are talking. If Julian can, I know he will,” she told me at the time. She added with a sly smile: “His wife

Queen Victoria's daughter Princess Louise 'had illegitimate son with brother's tutor'
Queen Victoria's rebellious sixth daughter Princess Louise had an illegitimate child with her brother's tutor, a leading biographer has claimed.
Louise is thought to have given birth to a son, whose father was her brother Leopold's tutor Walter Stirling.
But soon after he was born, he was adopted by the son of Queen Victoria's gynaecologist, Frederick Locock.
Lucinda Hawksley, an art historian and biographer, says although she has been denied access to documents which would definitely prove whether the claims are true, she believes the existing evidence is more than simply circumstantial.
Having seen photos of the baby – named Henry – and his descendants, she said there was a "remarkable similarity" between them and members of the Royal Family.

24 Nov 2013She told the Today programme: "It is very intriguing how Walter Stirling was taken on by the Royal household and then four months later completely dismissed but still manages to retain an allowance and an assurance of his discretion.
"Then there was a baby who has no birth certificate, born in 1866/1867, and was adopted very hastily by the son of Queen Victorias gynaecologist, a chap called Sir Charles Locock."
She said Locock's descendants had been trying to obtain a DNA sample from Henry's coffin to prove the link.
"They attempted this last time in 2004," she said.
She added: "I have seen their family photos and there was a remarkable similarity between them and some members of the Royal Family.
His descendants say they were told by their relative he was the son of Princess Louise and that he was able to see her up until the age of 16.
It has previously been claimed that Princess Louise also had a lover – a sculptor named Joseph Boehm, who died while they were making love.

Princess Eugenie could expand American empire
The Duke and Duchess of York travelled to New York last month when their daughter Princess Eugenie started work at the online fine art auctioneer Paddle8. The 23-year-old granddaughter of the Queen could, however, soon be back in Blighty.
Her boss, Alexander Gilkes, says the company he co-founded is to open an office in London.
“We’ve got a guy over here right now building a team,” he tells Mandrake at the GQ 25th anniversary dinner at the Phillips Gallery in Westminster, where he led the auction for the Prince’s Trust.
The Princess has a degree in Art History and English Literature from Newcastle University.
“We’re opening an office in London at the beginning of next year. One of our investors is Damien Hirst and his businessman is helping us. Jay Jopling is another investor who is offering us extra office support when we need it.”

Dame Clara Furse, a former boss of the London Stock Exchange, overcame MPs’ worries about her suitability to sit on the board of the Bank of England’s powerful new body overseeing financial stability.
Happily, she had no such concerns about her daughter’s boyfriend, Charlie Southern, 26, who works in finance. He has been “cleared” to marry Cornelia Furse, 26, an analyst at Fidelity International.
Dame Clara gave Cornelia and each of her two brothers, Maximilian and Ralf, £100,000 worth of stock in the LSE stock in 2008. It should be a good wedding.

Self-billed Saudi princess is 'faking ridiculous accent' in court to get away with £14m fraud, judge told
The self-billed Saudi princess being sued for £14m by former associates faked a "ridiculous" accent to con the High Court, a top judge has been told.
Sarah Al Amoudi is accused by Amanda Clutterbuck and Ian Paton of tricking them into transferring six prime London properties worth millions of pounds into her name "at nominal cost".
They claim she posed as the daughter of a powerful Saudi sheikh – whilst she was in fact an ex-prostitute who adopted the royal guise to pull off a fraud.
Barrister, Stuart Cakebread, for Ms Clutterbuck and Mr Paton, accused her of even faking her accent in court.
