Joanna Dennehy murders: Two men accused of helping serial killer will not give evidence in their defence
Two men accused of helping serial killer Joanna Dennehy will not give evidence in their defence, a jury heard yesterday.
Dennehy, 31, has admitted murdering three men and dumping their bodies in ditches.
Her alleged accomplices Gary Stretch, 47, and Leslie Layton, 37, are currently on trial.
Karim Khalil QC, acting for Stretch, told Cambridge Crown Court his client would not take the stand to give evidence.
Layton, who is represented by Christopher Morgan, made the same decision.
Closing the prosecution case, Andrew Jackson read out a telephone conversation Stretch made while in prison.
He called his ex-partner Julie Gibbons, who is the mother of his three children.
In it Ms Gibbons asked why Dennehy "did it."
Stretch responded: "Well she’s just that way, she’s just that way I suppose. You know what I mean, she's off her head."
Ms Gibbons said: "So why didn't you run a mile?

Andrew Mitchell: officer who accused me of 'pleb' comments is a liar
Andrew Mitchell was on Tuesday night locked in a new dispute with the police after he accused a serving officer of lying over the Plebgate scandal.
The former Conservative chief whip made the accusation against Pc Toby Rowland, who wrote a police log saying Mr Mitchell had called officers at the Downing Street gate “f------ plebs”.
However, Mr Rowlands said he was prepared to go to court and swear on oath that Mr Mitchell used the word “pleb” during the argument last year.
The comments suggest that a jury hearing a libel case brought by Mr Mitchell against The Sun newspaper will soon have to rule whether a senior politician or a police officer is lying.
The Crown Prosecution Service on Tuesday decided not to bring charges against Pc Rowland. Mr Mitchell disputes his account in the police log, but prosecutors said there was “insufficient evidence” to suggest that Pc Rowland was lying about the incident. Nor will the officer face police disciplinary action.

25 Nov 2013Alison Saunders, the director of public prosecutions, said there was also insufficient evidence “to show that Mr Mitchell was the victim of a conspiracy of misinformation”, as he has claimed.
One serving officer has been charged over allegations that he provided a false account of the Downing Street incident to another Conservative MP. Eight others will face disciplinary action.
The outcome of a prolonged investigation ended the hopes of Mr Mitchell’s supporters that he would be entirely vindicated, allowing him to resume his ministerial career.
Mr Mitchell held a press conference, at which he accused the police of failing to investigate allegations against their own officers properly. Rejecting the CPS conclusion concerning a conspiracy, he insisted that officers had colluded to “toxify” the Conservative Party and “destroy” his political career.
“Armed police officers guarding officials in Downing Street have stitched up one of those they were supposed to be protecting,” he said.
“I wish now to make clear that Pc Toby Rowland, who was responsible for writing those toxic phrases into his notebook, was not telling the truth.
“I will seek to say this on oath in a court of law and it is our intention to ensure that Pc Toby Rowland has similarly to swear his account.”
He added that the “phrases attributed to me are completely untrue”.
The officer who will be prosecuted is Pc Keith Wallis, 53, who allegedly sent an email to John Randall, then Mr Mitchell’s deputy, pretending to be a member of the public who witnessed the gate incident.
The altercation on Sept 19 last year was captured on CCTV and took place after police officers refused to allow Mr Mitchell to open the gates of Downing Street to let him pass on his bicycle. The police log of the incident recorded that Mr Mitchell called police “f------ plebs”, a phrase he has always denied using. He admits using the f-word and being warned by officers about his language.
Over the past 14 months, the police have arrested five officers and three civilians in relation to the incident.
In the press conference, Mr Mitchell showed a fuller version of the CCTV footage of the altercation. He argued that it proved it would have been impossible for him to utter the 40 words that police claimed included the offending phrase, in the six seconds he was in earshot of Pc Rowland.

Cy Chadwick sex charge: Former Emmerdale star appears in court accused of indecent assault on boy
A former Emmerdale star has denied indecently assaulting a boy in the 1980s.
Cy Chadwick, 44, who played bad boy Nick Bates for more than a decade, appeared at Leeds magistrates court today.
He pleaded not guilty to the allegation which involves a boy under 14.
The alleged assault took place at a time when Chadwick regularly appeared in the ITV soap.
Magistrates were told the charge relates to an offence which took place between September 1985 and September 1988.
The actor was 16 years old and had joined the Yorkshire-based soap the previous year.
Chadwick, of Leeds, West Yorks., who left the show in the 1990s to work in TV production, confirmed his date of birth and address in court on Thursday morning before entering a not guilty plea.
Due to the nature of the alleged crime, JPs made the decision to move his case to Leeds Crown Court after a brief hearing.
He was released on bail to appear there later this month.
The actor was one of the longest serving in the hit soap. His character was sent to jail for arson.

Councillor accused of bribing elderly with cakes
A councillor is under investigation by police over claims she bribed elderly voters with cakes to win a local election.
Susan Shinnick, a Labour councillor, won the seat in the Stifford Clays ward in Thurrock, Essex, following a by-election last month.
Essex Police confirmed they are looking into allegations she bought elderly voters cakes to boost her campaign.
A spokesman said: "Police are continuing to investigate an allegation of treating in Thurrock."
The inquiry centres on a lunchtime visit to Elizabeth Gardens retirement homes in the town of Grays, it is understood.

24 Jun 2013Cllr Shinnick, who is currently on leave, is alleged to have given cakes to elderly residents during the visit, which came 11 days before her election victory.
Police are expected to speak to her in connection with the claims.
Election rules state a candidate is guilty of treating if he or she "either before, during or after an election directly or indirectly gives or provides any food, drink, entertainment or provision to corruptly influence any voter to vote or refrain from voting."
The Electoral Commission states that to be guilty of treating one must have a “corrupt intent” and the charge does not relate to ordinary hospitality.
An East of England Labour party spokesman defended Ms Shinnick, saying: "No one who cared about Thurrock would be wasting the police's time with ridiculous, unfounded claims.
"This is a pathetic and politically-motivated stunt."
Cllr Shinnick won her Stifford Clays seat after taking 36.8% of the vote, defeating the Conservative candidate, Danny Nicklen, who won 32.5%.
The by-election on October 17 followed the death of the long-standing Labour councillor Diana Hale.
Cllr Hale died of cancer in August at the age of 66.

Police suspended after innocent man accused of paedophilia burned to death
Bijan Ebrahimi, a keen gardener, took pictures of local youths as they attacked his plants and intended to hand the photographs to police as evidence.
But instead officers were called when he was seen with the camera and he was led away for questioning as residents chanted “paedo, paedo”.
Officers realised their mistake at the police station and he was released, but rumours had already begun circulating that he was a child abuser and two days later he was beaten unconscious, dragged into the street and set on fire.
His family believe that he was failed by the authorities.
“The police should have taken especially seriously his calls for help in the days before he was murdered,” they said in a statement.
