Two men and a woman arrested over the death of seven-week-old baby boy from head injuries

Tragic: The baby died after being initially taken to The Royal Oldham HospitalGoogle

Two men and a woman have been arrested after the death of a seven-week-old baby boy from severe head injuries.

The badly injured infant was taken to the Royal Oldham Hospital in the early hours of last Saturday.

The boy, who lived in Oldham, was later transferred to the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, where he later died.

A 23-year-old woman and 35-year-old man originally arrested on suspicion of assault have been rearrested on suspicion of murder and conspiring to pervert the course of justice, police said.

A 26-year-old man has also been arrested on suspicion of murder and conspiring to pervert the course of justice.

Detective Inspector Andy Cunliffe, from GMP's major incident team, said: "This is a tragic case in which a very young baby has lost his life and we are determined to find out exactly what the circumstances were that led to him suffering such injuries.

"News of the death of such a little boy will no doubt come as a great shock to people and I would like to try and reassure the community as much as I can that we have a team of detectives dedicated to working on this investigation, and they will today be interviewing the three people in our custody.

"If anyone has any information at all that they believe may assist us with our inquiries, then please get in touch and tell us what you know."

St Lucia yacht murder: Four men charged with Roger Pratt's death

By Raf Sanchez, Washington

8:07PM GMT 25 Jan 2014

Four young St Lucian men have been charged with the murder of British yachtsmen Roger Pratt.

The 62-year-old retired consultant was beaten and left to drown and his wife, Margaret, was injured when robbers attacked their yacht last Friday.

One week after the killing police brought the first murder charges against four men arrested nearby in the southern port of Vieux Fort.

The government named them as Richie Kern 21, Kervin Devaux 31, Fanis Joseph, 21, and Jeromine Jones, 21. All are from the shanty town of Bruceville.

They appeared briefly before a district court in Vieux Fort to face charges of murder and robbery on Friday and are due back in court on February 4.

A spokeswoman for the St Lucian prime minister, Kenny Anthony, said: "It is very encouraging to see that information provided by the local community has led to arrests and to charges.

"We will be monitoring this case carefully and hope it will serve as an example that this kind of activity is unacceptable and will not go unpunished."

A post-mortem examination concluded that Mr Pratt's killers beat him with their fists until he was knocked unconscious and then let him drown in the harbour.

The St Lucian government has been anxious to see a swift prosecution in order to reassure the British and American visitors upon whom the island's tourist economy depends.

Coroner warns of online messaging dangers after death of teenager

By Alice Philipson

1:27PM GMT 26 Nov 2013

A coroner has warned of the dangers of online messages after a teenager killed himself because of bullies on Facebook.

Lewis Thelwall, 19, was sent "malicious" messages by two young women who had "little idea of what affect it would have".

Mr Thelwall, who was described as a "happy-go-lucky character", later took his own life.

The inquest heard how the teenager, a forensics and photography student, was targeted for false rumours by other teenagers on the social network site.

He had recently lost his father, which caused him considerable distress.

Coroner Philip Rogers said there was a "long and complicated" story involving Facebook messages.

He said: "I can only describe this as Facebook bullying.

"I would urge anyone who uses this sort of social media to think of the consequences."

Mr Rogers said comments made online caused Mr Thelwall great distress, particularly following the death of his father.

He continued: "Two young women known to Lewis have taken it upon themselves to make entries on Facebook which they now accept as malicious and completely unfounded.

"Sadly he was a young man who was vulnerable because of the death of his father.

"The two young women have accepted their responsibility for these messages.

"They accepted they had little idea of what affect it would have on Lewis."

The two women – who can't be identified for legal reasons – have been given a caution for malicious communication.

Detective Constable Lee Stephens described Mr Thelwall, originally from Swindon but who moved to Wales when he was nine, as a "happy-go-lucky character" who was upset at Facebook slurs.

Lewis's mother Tina echoed the warning about Facebook bullying.

She said: "Be careful what you write.

"Behind closed doors you don't know what is going on. They did not understand what Lewis was going through."

Mr Rogers recorded a verdict of suicide.

Detectives launched a murder probe today after a man was apparently thrown to his death from an eighth-floor balcony in the Foleshill area of Coventry.

The victim, in his early 30s, was discovered by a horrified passer-by in the road next to the Paradise House tower block on Eden Street.

He was rushed to hospital by ambulance but pronounced dead in the early hours of this morning.

A 39-year-old man later handed himself into cops at a police station close to the scene.

West Midlands Police said detectives are questioning him on suspicion of murder.

The victim is not being named until next of kin have been informed and a post mortem carried out.

Superintendent Nick Walton, from Coventry Police, said:

Motorcycle champion arrested after wife's honeymoon death in Dubai

SEANY555/TWITTER By News agencies

11:05AM GMT 05 Dec 2013

A motorcycle champion has been arrested at Heathrow airport over the death of his wife on their honeymoon in Dubai.

Father-of-three Sean Emmett, 43, was held by officers as he stepped off a plane as police probed the circumstances surrounding how Abbie Emmettt plunged to her death from their hotel room in Dubai.

She was killed just days after the newly-weds had arrived in the United Arab Emirates following their wedding in Cape Town, South Africa, in February.

Dubai authorities had investigated the 27-year-old's death, but found no suspicious circumstances and believed it to be a suicide leap from a window.

Mr Emmett, now a retired professional MotoGP rider, was quoted in the media at the time as saying: "I did not kill my wife – it was an accident."

Anxiang Du trial: Businessman says "darkness" came over him before 'stabbing to death family of four', court hears

Murdered: Jifeng Ding with his wife Helen and daughters Xing and AlicePA

A man accused of murdering a family of four told a psychiatrist that "darkness" came over him as he carried out the brutal stabbings, a court has heard.

Anxiang Du, 54, is accused of knifing Manchester Metropolitan University lecturer Jifeng "Jeff" Ding, his wife Ge "Helen" Chui, and their two daughters, Xing "Nancy", 18, and Alice, 12, on April 29, 2011.

During his trial at Northampton Crown Court, which began last week, a jury of eight women and four men has heard that he allegedly carried out the stabbings following a long-running legal dispute after a business relationship turned sour.

After the killings at the family's home in Wootton, Northamptonshire, Du, who denies four counts of murder, fled to Morocco where he was eventually arrested and extradited back to the UK, the court has heard.

Today Professor Nigel Eastman, a forensic psychiatrist, told jurors he interviewed Du in prison in August last year after he was brought back to the UK to face four charges of murder.

Luton stabbing: Have-a-go heroes grab suspect after pensioner is knifed to death in her car

Probe: Police have launched a murder investigation after a pensioner was killed in LutonPA

Heroic passers-by grabbed a man in the street moments after he had allegedly stabbed a woman in her 70s to death while she was in her car.

Police raced to the horrific scene in Luton, Beds, this afternoon and arrested a man after members of the public reportedly held on to him.

The victim was treated by paramedics but was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

Police originally arrested a man in his 50s - who is known to the victim - on suspicion of attempted murder.

He was later re-arrested on suspicion of murder after the woman died.

Bedfordshire Police's DCI Jonathan Hutchinson, investigating, said: "We have launched a murder investigation and a team of detectives is now piecing together exactly what happened.

"I would like to reassure residents that this is an isolated incident.

"This is obviously an extremely difficult time for the victim’s family but our officers are working with them to establish what happened prior to the incident."

Wife quizzed as elderly GP stabbed to death

By Ben Riley-Smith

3:27PM GMT 15 Nov 2013

The wife of an elderly Cornish doctor is being quizzed in hospital by police after he was found stabbed to death at the couple's coastal home.

Officers are talking to the 58-year-old, believed to be married to the victim, who has non-life threatening injuries from what has been called a "domestic incident".

The deceased has been named locally as Gary Hughes, who had lived in Feock, Cornwall for a number of years and was a GP in the Camborne and Redruth area.

It is understood he had recently held a party for friends, family and neighbours to celebrate his 60th birthday.

Police and paramedics were called to the couple's home around at 7.40am, where inside they found the body of a man with stab wounds to the chest. He was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

"An investigation had now begun to fully understand the circumstances and events leading up to this man's death."

Neighbour Chris Young said: "When it comes so close to your doorstep it is very worrying. This is a very quiet area with very few passers-by."

Hamzah Khan: 'deep concerns' over failure to explain death

Amanda Hutton was jailed for 15 years after she was found guilty of the manslaughter of her son, Hamzah Khan Photo: Andrew McCaren/Ross Parry Agency By Edward Malnick

A minister has said he has “deep concerns” over an official report into the death of Hamzah Khan, a toddler who was starved to death by his mother.

Edward Timpson, the children’s minister, said there were a series of “glaring absences” in the review.

He singled out the “failure” of the serious case review to fully explain the actions “taken, or not taken” by authorities to intervene.

The review, published by the Bradford Safeguarding Children’s Board, found that Hamzah Khan’s death “could not have been predicted”, but said he was “let down” by systems.

The report comes a day after Michael Gove, the Education Secretary, cited Hamzah's case in a warning that lessons had not been learned from the tragic deaths of children, also including Baby P and Daniel Pelka, who had been failed by authorities.

It concluded that Hamzah’s mother, Amanda Hutton, misled health and school workers about Hamzah’s whereabouts, allowing him to “disappear ‘from the radar’ of the services”.

Hamzah’s body was discovered lying mummified in squalid conditions in his mother's home in September 2011.

Last month a jury convicted Hutton of manslaughter after hearing that she had no regard for her son's welfare.

The trial heard that Hamzah died on Dec 15 2009, while Hutton was at a supermarket - his death going undetected by authorities for almost two years.

On Wednesday morning Nick Frost, professor of social work at Leeds Met University and the independent chairman of the BSCB, said the various agencies involved in Hamzah’s case, including police and doctors, failed to carry out a coordinated “assessment” of Hutton’s household.

“Such an assessment may have given a comprehensive picture of circumstances in the household and should have led to a multi-agency meeting,” he said.

Prof Frost also suggested that one of Hamzah’s siblings twice raised concerns that “all was not well in the family”. The sibling “could have been listened to more carefully,” he concluded.

But in a letter to Prof Frost Mr Timpson outlined a series of “missed opportunities” to protect Hamzah and his siblings, which he said were not addressed properly in the report.

The prosecution at Hutton’s trial had asked how it was possible that a child had “starved to death in 21st century England”.

Hamzah’s decomposed body was discovered only after a police community support officer visited the house on her second day in the job and sensed that Hutton was “hiding something” when she refused to let her in.

Hutton, 43, the daughter of a nurse, came from a middle class background and was "well–spoken", something which appeared to have “thrown” some of those who came into contact with her.

She was working as a care assistant for the elderly when she met Aftab Khan, a taxi driver, and had her first child in 1989, aged 18.

The couple had seven more children, including Hamzah, who was born on June 17, 2005.

By then Hutton was well known to police, who had been called to her home repeatedly for years following beatings by Khan.

They answered 999 calls from Hutton eight times between 2004 and 2008.

Following the death of Hutton's mother on Christmas Eve 2005 she turned to drink, and repeatedly asked the police, doctors and social workers for help.

In the year after Hamzah's birth, she asked police for help in getting away from her abusive husband, asked her GP for help with depression and asked the local social services child protection unit for advice.

Hamzah, meanwhile, was slowly starving. Having been seen at home by a midwife six days after his birth, and by a health visitor two weeks later, he was never again seen by a health professional.

Health visitors who went to the home more than six times following missed immunisations eventually gave up after Hutton slammed the door in their face.

Hamzah was not registered with a GP until he was 15 months old, but he was never taken there, and Hutton's GP deleted the child from her patient list rather than inquiring after his welfare.

Police suspended after innocent man accused of paedophilia burned to death

Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens says there are "some real questions that need to be asked" after the brutal murder of Bijan Ebrahimi who was burned to death by vigilantes after being wrongly accused of being a paedophile. 7:10AM GMT 03 Nov 2013

Bijan Ebrahimi, a keen gardener, took pictures of local youths as they attacked his plants and intended to hand the photographs to police as evidence.

But instead officers were called when he was seen with the camera and he was led away for questioning as residents chanted “paedo, paedo”.

Officers realised their mistake at the police station and he was released, but rumours had already begun circulating that he was a child abuser and two days later he was beaten unconscious, dragged into the street and set on fire.

His family believe that he was failed by the authorities.

“The police should have taken especially seriously his calls for help in the days before he was murdered,” they said in a statement.
