Royal Marine jailed for life for murdering wounded Taliban fighter 'in cold blood'

. It's nothing you wouldn't do to us.”

Blackman, a 15-year veteran in the marines, then turned to his patrol and said: "Obviously this doesn't go anywhere, fellas. I just broke the Geneva Convention."

Judge Jeff Blackett

Two other soldiers, known only as Marine B and Marine C, were acquitted of murder by the court martial board in Bulford, Wiltshire last month.

They were thought to have "encouraged and assisted" in the murder but were later cleared.

Blackman, known as Marine A throughout the trial, denied the murder claiming he believed the insurgent was already dead.

However today Judge Jeff Blackett told him: "You treated that Afghan man with contempt and murdered him in cold blood.

"By doing so you have betrayed your corps and all British service personnel who have served in Afghanistan, and you have tarnished their reputation."

The judge said he took into account that many had supported the marine for  his "killing within conflict" but said that these members of the public "are very wrong".

Britain's 'most wanted' knifeman who stole mum's car with her two children in back seat is jailed

Jailed: Cedric Brown

A gangster who car-jacked a mum-of-two and sped off with her toddlers still strapped inside was jailed today.

Cedric Brown, 46, was one of the country’s most wanted men when he carried out the terrifying knifepoint robbery.

He was featured on BBC’s Crimewatch as a suspect following a raid in which a couple were tied up and slashed with a knife.

The car-jacking took place in April last year as Brown tried to flee the scene of an attempted burglary.

He threatened Lucy Lawton with an eight inch commando dagger as she took her children to play-school in her Ford Focus.

The 6ft 4in career criminal then sped off with her one-year-old son and two-year-old daughter in their car seats.

Police arrived at the scene in Erdington, Birmingham, to find their

Attacker who left victim 'looking like the Elephant Man' jailed for three years

Jailed: Billy Swindells

A Merseyside man wept as he was jailed for a vicious attack which a court was told left his victim looking like the Elephant Man.

Billy Swindells launched the attack thinking his victim had assaulted him two weeks earlier - but he got the wrong man.

A court heard he had never been in trouble before, and had acted out of character while drunk.

Swindells, 20, came up behind Robert Hignett and Saul Fowles as they were walking near Wigan Road, Ormskirk, on their way to a party in the early hours of March 13, the Liverpool Echo reports.

Paul Becker, prosecuting, said Swindells started kicking Mr Fowles and threw him to the ground and repeatedly kicked him to the head.

When arrested Swindells said he had been out drinking and was drunk when he saw the two men and believed they had

Pensioner jailed after conning blind widow out of £2.2m estate

Mogens Hauschildt Photo: Central News By News agencies

10:02AM GMT 13 Nov 2013

A pensioner who went on the run after conning a blind widow out of her £2.2m estate has been jailed for 10 years.

Mogens Hauschildt, 72, posed as a financial advisor in a bid to strip his wealthy family friend of her home and £1m savings, leaving her penniless.

Hauschildt tricked Pamela Schutzmann, 91, into signing over her house in Hampstead, northwest London, by making her sign documents that she could not read due to her poor vision.

The Danish fraudster had won his victim's trust following the death of her husband in 1984 and after marrying her former au pair, Isleworth Crown Court heard.

His grip over her finances was so powerful that he was even able to access accounts set up by Mrs Schutzmann's late husband, a Jewish refugee who fled Nazi Austria in the 1930s.

Hauschildt went on the run after the allegations emerged and was tried and convicted in his absence of forgery, obtaining property by deception, money laundering and six counts of fraud in 2009.

He was finally captured by police in Germany in April this year after a European Warrant was issued for his arrest.

Judge Anna Guggenheim QC, said Hauschildt fleeced Mrs Schutzmann out of money that would have gone to three generations of her family.

"Mrs Schutzmann planned on leaving the wealth she inherited from her late husband's death to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren - the house was one of those assets," she said.

The judge told the conman: "You were a determined and thoroughly dishonest confidence trickster.

"You presented yourself as knowledgeable and sophisticated in matters of finance and told her that you would protect her interests."

When the judge said Mrs Schutzmann was unaware of Hauschildt's previous conviction for fraud in his native Denmark, he became abusive in the dock.

He shouted at Judge Guggenheim: "I don't want to listen to this s

Vengeful polo trainer jailed after setting fire to love rival's car

By Ben Riley-Smith, and agencies

A vengeful husband who set fire to a polo-playing love rival's car who had started dating his wife has been jailed for more than three years.

Gustavo Gallardo became enraged when he discovered Trudy Erceg was having a fling with another man who worked at the prestigious Dubai Polo Club.

The 35-year-old Argentinian spied on his wife and saw her getting into Julio Ruggeri's car before following the pair back to the Dubai team's summer base in Berkshire, a judge heard.

He wanted to confront Mr Ruggeri face-to-face but "chickened out" at the last minute, instead taking revenge by pouring petrol onto a red Ford Focus car and setting it alight, the court was told.

The flames quickly spread like a domino effect to another vehicle – causing £21,000 pounds worth of damage.

The attack also caused superficial damage to a central heating tank containing 1,000 litres of oil at a large bungalow during the arson strike near the White Hart public house in Maidenhead, Berkshire, on June 17.

The 11.30pm attack was carried out during the height of the polo season in the UK. The touring Dubai club were based in the Berkshire town for several weeks this summer.

Gallardo, who carried out the training of polo ponies and was a groom at a £3.5 million pounds stud farm near Horsham, West Sussex, fled the scene without calling the emergency services.

"The fire was started deliberately at a time when a number of people were indoors," said prosecutor Michael Roques.

Timothy Greaves, defending, said: "He should have called for help, but he didn't. He panicked and he is very sorry for that. He has expressed remorse. He is very ashamed of his actions.

"It wasn't pre-planned. It was a spur of the moment thing. He wanted to have it out with the gentleman, but he 'chickened out'."

Judge Zoe Smith told Gallardo, who stood in the dock at Reading Crown Court: "You were employed as a polo horse trainer and groom and were living in Horsham in June this year.

"Mr Ruggeri was similarly employed by a different polo club and he and members of his team were staying in a property in Maidenhead.

"That property was a large bungalow in a remote location. It housed up to eight people. Your wife was a work colleague of Mr Ruggeri and you noticed that they were attracted to one another.

"It would appear that your relationship with your wife deteriorated and there was a period of about three weeks where she was not speaking to you.

"It would appear you drove to Maidenhead to observe her that night and you saw her getting into Mr Ruggeri's car. It is very likely you then followed that red Focus car to the bungalow.

"At 13.03 on June 17 you wrote on your social network site (Facebook) 'I want to harm, he he he.' I am told by your counsel that the (Spanish) interpretation should be you 'wanted to get drunk' or something like that. Later that day you did go out and you did cause damage."

CCTV showed him going to her area near a public house, the hearing was told.

"Later that evening you set a fire using petrol as an accelerant. The Focus car was engulfed in flames. The flames spread to a second vehicle and there was a blackened trail containing traces of accelerant to the coroner of the bungalow," she said.

"You say that was set for the purposes of setting the car alight and acted as a fuse so you would not harm yourself. There was however a serious risk of a significant explosion being caused."

There was a large oil tank containing 1,000 litres of oil and the heat of the fire caused the plastic sheeting to melt. Up to 75 mats were used by firefighters to mop up the oil.

"This was a serious fire and even though you had set it carefully, it got more out of control than you had expected. You left the scene without calling any emergency services.

"It would appear to be a revenge attack. You say it was not premeditated but you admit you set the fire deliberately.

Gallardo was sentenced for arson, which the judge said "must reflect the seriousness of the case." He pleaded guilty at an early stage for which he was given credit. He had no previous convictions.

He was described as being "polite, friendly and very conscientious" by his work colleagues.

Gallardo, of Shipley, West Sussex, was sentenced to a total of three years and four months in prison. He will serve half that time before he is released on licence. The dark-haired defendant, who sat in the dock with a Spanish interpreter, appeared emotionless as he learned his fate.

Disgraced Stuart Hall stripped of OBE after being jailed for sex offences

However he eventually admitted 14 counts of indecent assault against girls aged between nine and 17 over a period of almost 20 years in April. A reporting ban on his pleas was lifted in May.

In rising his jail term to 30 months, Lord Chief Justice Lord Judge said his initial denials of his crimes were a "seriously aggravating" feature in the case.

The married star's eccentric and erudite football match summaries made him a cult figure on BBC Radio 5 Live.

He also wrote a weekly sport column for the Radio Times magazine up until his arrest.

In 1999 various Members of Parliament signed a House of Commons motion, congratulating Hall on 40 years in broadcasting.

He was made an OBE in the 2012 New Year's list.
