Prince Charles: I wish I'd had grandchildren sooner

Comments

The Prince of Wales, who became a grandfather at the age of 64, wishes it had happened when he was younger.

According to one of the guests at his 65th birthday party at Buckingham Palace last week, Prince Charles described “how he really enjoyed being a grandfather and how he wished he had grandchildren earlier”.

The guest adds in the New York Post: “He said he was envious of his friends who already have many grandchildren.”

Charles was 32 when he married Diana, Princess of Wales, and Prince William was 28 at the time of his wedding to the Duchess of Cambridge. This week, it was confirmed that Sir Mick Jagger, who is only five years older than Charles, is due to become a great-grandfather in the new year.

Romola’s delight in her great roll

Romola Garai had to spend a day with a real-life spy as part of her research for her role in the Seventies espionage thriller Legacy, but the 31-year-old actress has no desire to be the first woman to play James Bond.

“Oh my God, no,” she wails in Time Out. “You’d have to spend so much time in the gym. Can you imagine? No, I just love sitting around on my arse watching telly and eating sausage rolls.”

Still, she concedes that woman are under-represented in spy stories, which is why she was happy to take a part in Legacy.

Of the real spy she met, she found him unexpectedly “good-looking and quite flamboyant”. Her last big thriller was Stephen Poliakoff’s disappointing Glorious 39.

Prince William sings with Jon Bon Jovi and Taylor Swift

Prince William belts out Bon Jovi's Livin' On A Prayer rock anthem after joining him and US pop star Taylor Swift on stage at a charity event 7:31AM GMT 27 Nov 2013

The Duke of Cambridge joined Jon Bon Jovi and Taylor Swift on stage to sing for an impromptu rendition of the hit song Livin' On A Prayer as real and rock royalty joined forces in the name of charity.

The trio were the main attractions at the Winter Whites Gala in Kensington Palace tonight to support homeless charity Centrepoint. While they were the most sought after guests, others included Benedict Cumberbatch, James Blunt and Tinie Tempah.

The Prince, who has been a patron of the Centrepoint charity since September 2005, delivered a speech and presented the Centrepoint Great Britain Youth Inspiration Award to Bon Jovi for his humanitarian work.

Bon Jovi's Soul Foundation was founded in the US in 2006 and aims to break the cycle of people falling into poverty and homelessness by helping them gain access to food and affordable housing along with job training programmes.

Centrepoint works with hundreds of young people to help them tackle issues that can lead to homelessness.

The Duke of Cambridge has a good singing voice and should do a charity single, according to rock superstar Jon Bon Jovi.

Bon Jovi praised the Duke's tuneful notes after he joined him, along with Taylor Swift, on stage to sing an impromptu version of Livin' on a Prayer at a charity event.

And after his crowd pleasing performance, the Duke could find he is now in high demand, with Bon Jovi saying he would be keen to make a charity single with the Duke.

"His Royal Highness had 'it'," he said. "If he ever wants to give up his day job, we could do a charity single for Centre Point and the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation."

"He was a great sport and I can assure you all the man can sing."

Swift said: “This is my first time playing at Kensington Palace or any palace for that matter," she said. "I want to thank you for having me Prince William, this is just amazing."

Benedict Cumberbatch, James Blunt and Tinie Tempah were also at the event on Tuesday night.

Duchess of Cambridge meets sports stars of the future

The Duchess of Cambridge celebrates some of Britain's most promising Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls as she attends a glittering gala ball 8:40AM GMT 29 Nov 2013

The Duchess of Cambridge met some of Britain's most promising Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls at the SportsAid fundraising dinner in London last night.

The Duchess became the organisation's patron earlier this year and in October visited the former Olympic Park to see young sportsmen and women taking part in workshops run by the charity at the Copper Box arena.

She wowed the young athletes when she stepped on to a volleyball court and played in a pair of towering wedges.

SportsAid is a charity which gives young athletes a financial boost and other practical help as they emerge on the international stage.

During London 2012 it helped 20 of the 29 Olympic gold medallists and 27 of the 34 Paralympic gold winners.

Sport stars supported by the charity in the past include cyclists Sir Bradley Wiggins and Sir Chris Hoy, heptathlete Jessica Ennis, diver Tom Daley, wheelchair racer David Weir and Paralympic swimmer Ellie Simmonds.

Before the evening was over Kate presented the One-to-Watch Award to Amber Hill, 16, who already competes with the senior British shooting team and is ranked fifth in the world.

This year at the world championships she smashed a junior world record with a score that equalled the senior world record.
