Two men and a woman arrested over the death of seven-week-old baby boy from head injuries
Two men and a woman have been arrested after the death of a seven-week-old baby boy from severe head injuries.
The badly injured infant was taken to the Royal Oldham Hospital in the early hours of last Saturday.
The boy, who lived in Oldham, was later transferred to the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, where he later died.
A 23-year-old woman and 35-year-old man originally arrested on suspicion of assault have been rearrested on suspicion of murder and conspiring to pervert the course of justice, police said.
A 26-year-old man has also been arrested on suspicion of murder and conspiring to pervert the course of justice.
Detective Inspector Andy Cunliffe, from GMP's major incident team, said: "This is a tragic case in which a very young baby has lost his life and we are determined to find out exactly what the circumstances were that led to him suffering such injuries.
"News of the death of such a little boy will no doubt come as a great shock to people and I would like to try and reassure the community as much as I can that we have a team of detectives dedicated to working on this investigation, and they will today be interviewing the three people in our custody.
"If anyone has any information at all that they believe may assist us with our inquiries, then please get in touch and tell us what you know."

Should we make children stay at school until 6pm?
A new nine-hour school day is at the heart of a controversial proposal that would also cut holidays from 13 weeks a year to just seven.
The plan was devised by David Cameron’s former policy advisor Paul Kirby, who claims it would help prepare kids for the world of work, reduce street crime and make it easier for parents to juggle full-time work and childcare.
But critics say it would put too much pressure on youngsters and teachers, as well as costing hundreds of millions in extra pay for staff.
Here two leading education experts give both sides of the argument.
YESChris McGovern - Retired head and Chairman of The Campaign For Real Education
Education is a good thing. When I was a head, kids were breaking the door down to get into school. We hear a lot about disaffected young but not enough about how children actually want to be in school, they want to improve themselves and they enjoy being with their friends.
Longer school hours will mean children will have a richer, fuller curriculum so they are going to be able to do more in school. They will do better in maths and literacy but also have time to do foreign languages, which are squeezed out at the moment.
A recent report shows there are jobs out there but they can’t find the youngsters with the basic literacy and numeracy skills to fill them. In other parts of the world, particularly in Asian countries children are doing longer hours. Essentially we’re falling behind the rest of the world’s developed countries.
It’s going to benefit those kids who really need it

Abuser raped teenage victim and told her: 'I am so lucky, I am so happy. I am controlling your life'
A rapist who used emotional blackmail to carry out sickening sex abuse on a teenage girl was jailed for 17 years today.
Mohammed Fakhrul Islam, 33, was sentenced at Snaresbrook Crown Court, east London, after being found guilty of three counts of rape, one of battery and one of voyeurism.
After the third rape he told his victim: "I am so lucky, I am so happy. I am controlling your life."
He began his campaign of abuse two years after meeting the victim in Bangladesh in 2008.
In 2010 the girl, then aged 18, came to the UK to study, and was staying with a relative, police said.
Not knowing anyone in the country she gave her number to Islam believing him to be trustworthy.
They became friends but after a while he became threatening when he saw her talking with other men.
Police said that late in 2010 they met up and Islam took the victim to a friend's house.
Once there he told her she had to have sex with him or he would contact her parents and inform them they were in a relationship and that her reputation would be ruined.
In fear the victim ran to one of her attacker's friends seeking help, but he refused and told her to return to Islam.
He then grabbed her and dragged her into a bedroom and raped her while secretly filming the attack on his mobile phone.
He then told her that if she did not do what he wanted he would tell her family they were having sex, police said.
A week later Islam told the victim they were now in a relationship and could have sex often.
He also told her he had footage of the earlier incident and that if she refused to have sex with him he would show the footage to her family and post it online with her phone number, implying she was a prostitute.
He threatened to kill her if she went out with any other man. He raped her a second time and again recorded it.
In February 2013 the victim began to suffer from serious depression as a result of the ongoing abuse and her studies began to suffer.
Her parents indicated that they were keen for her to marry and when she told Islam he flew into a rage, demanding she come to his house and saying he would ruin her life if she refused to do so.
The victim went to Islam's house in east London where he raped her before telling her: "I am so lucky; I am so happy. I am controlling your life."
Later, when she refused to go home with him after a shift at work he attacked her and her colleague - strangling her and assaulting the colleague with a set of keys - before fleeing the scene.
After being convinced by her colleague to report the matter the victim found the courage to report the mental and sexual abuse she had been subjected to.
In March last year, Islam was arrested and later charged.
Detective Constable Caroline Horden, from the Metropolitan Police's Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command, said: "The victim has shown great strength of character, she found the courage to come forward and speak about her terrible ordeal and because of this a very dangerous individual has been brought to justice."

Cops release CCTV image of man wanted over assault on brother of Big Brother star Josie Gibson
Police hunting two thugs who attacked Big Brother star Josie Gibson's deaf brother have released a CCTV image of a man they want to interview.
Harry Gibson, 27, was left with a broken nose and facial injuries after he was set upon at a Bristol club.
It is understood Harry, who became deaf after contracting meningitis as a baby, was approached by at least two men who asked him for directions.
When he started to sign a reply, rather than speaking aloud, the callous thugs turned on him and beat him up.
Disgusted Josie later tweeted: "I'm going to hunt the bullies who did this.
"The nicest guy ever was beaten up because they thought he was deaf & dumb."

Prince Charles: good food in hospitals should be a priority
Prince Charles wants the NHS to see "food as a medicine in itself", claiming better hospital meals would speed up recovery times.
He called for the quality of food served by the NHS to be made a "clinical priority" and said long-overdue changes could have benefits in other areas of health care such as malnutrition among the elderly.
It comes less than a month after the Telegraph disclosed that more than one in three hospital trusts have cut spending on patients’ meals in the past year.
Some hospitals are now spending as little as 69p on each meal, according to Department of Health figures, with meals at one trust described as “worse than prison”.
During an event at Clarence House organised by Prince Charles and the Department of Health, the prince said that what patients eat "will feed enormously into improving not only people’s health but also reducing the levels of malnutrition amongst the elderly".

15 Jan 2014He highlighted the recently introduced Hospital Food Exemplar CQUIN (Commissioning for Quality and Innovation), which allows commissioners to reward hospital trusts for delivering high quality food.
In a speech Charles said it was important to "see food as a medicine in itself", according to the Daily Mail.
He added: "You can imagine just how delighted I was that last month NHS England launched an initiative CQUIN, which for the first time actually encouraged commissioners to make hospital food a clinical priority."
He described Mike Duckett, former catering manager at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London, as an "inspiration".
Mr Duckett reopened a number of shutdown hospital kitchens and set them up with an organic chef and links to local farmers in Kent who were able to supply them with fresh seasonal produce.
Charles said this kind of enterprise created a "virtuous circle" of sustainability, helping the local economy and ensuring better patient health.

Prince Charles: climate change deniers are 'headless chickens'
Prince Charles has criticised climate change deniers, describing them as the "headless chicken brigade" during an awards ceremony recognising a leading young green entrepreneur.
Charles, who has campaigned for years to reduce global warming, also spoke out against "the barrage of sheer intimidation" from powerful anti-climate change groups during the event held at Buckingham Palace last night.
He presented Gamal Albinsaid with the inaugural Prince of Wales Young Sustainability Entrepreneur Prize, designed to inspire young people around the world to tackle environmental, social and health issues.
In a speech to announce the winner, Charles told the invited audience of finalists, sustainability experts, entrepreneurs, business leaders and policy makers: "It is baffling, I must say, that in our modern world we have such blind trust in science and technology that we all accept what science tells us about everything – until, that is, it comes to climate science.
"All of a sudden, and with a barrage of sheer intimidation, we are told by powerful groups of deniers that the scientists are wrong and we must abandon all our faith in so much overwhelming scientific evidence.

20 Jan 2014"So, thank goodness for our young entrepreneurs here this evening, who have the far-sightedness and confidence in what they know is happening to ignore the headless chicken brigade and do something practical to help."
He also told the guests: "As you may possibly have noticed from time to time, I have tended to make a habit of sticking my head above the parapet and generally getting it shot off for pointing out what has always been blindingly obvious to me.
"Perhaps it has been too uncomfortable for those with vested interests to acknowledge, but we have spent the best part of the past century enthusiastically testing the world to utter destruction; not looking closely enough at the long-term impact our actions will have."
Mr Albinsaid is the founder of the Indonesian social enterprise Garbage Clinical Insurance, an innovative project which helps the poorest communities gain access to health services and education through the collection and recycling of rubbish.
The international competition, developed in partnership with Unilever and the Cambridge Programme for Sustainability Leadership (CPSL), which has Charles as patron, was designed to find the next generation of sustainable-living entrepreneurs.
The winning entrepreneur's project will now benefit from a prize fund of just over £40,000 in financial support and a package of individually tailored mentoring from both CPSL and Unilever in the coming months.

Concern as report exposes huge variation in way police handle rape cases
Up to one in three reported rapes are being written off by the police, according to a new report which uncovered “stark differences” in the way forces deal with the crime.
Officials from Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) said some forces may have a “culture of disbelief” which has a negative impact on the way they treat rape victims.
The research exposed huge variations in the number of rapes which police decide to designate as “no crime”, meaning they are declassified because officers believe a crime did not take place.
One force, Lincolnshire, discontinued investigations in 33 per cent of rapes which were reported by alleged victims, and Leicestershire dropped 29 per cent, compared with a 12 per cent national average and less than 5 per cent in Cumbria and Durham.
Dru Sharpling, of HMIC, said: “There is a stark difference in the no crime rates. We would expect no crime rates to be relatively low.

Honeymoon murder suspect Shrien Dewani loses attempt to block extradition to South Africa
Honeymoon murder suspect Shrien Dewani has lost a High Court bid to block his extradition to South Africa until he is fit to stand trial.
A panel of three judges, headed by Lord Chief Justice Lord Thomas, ruled that it would not be ''unjust and oppressive'' to extradite him if an undertaking was given by the South African government relating to how long he would be kept in the country without trial.
The court heard earlier that the government indicated it was willing to give that undertaking.
Dewani, from Bristol, has been fighting removal from the UK to face proceedings over wife Anni's death until he has recovered from mental health problems, including depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.
Dewani, who is compulsorily detained in hospital under the Mental Health Act, is accused of ordering the killing of his new wife Anni, 28, who was shot as the couple travelled in a taxi on the outskirts of Cape Town in November 2010.

15 Sep 2013Fresh doubts in Dewani honeymoon murder
25 Mar 2012His lawyers have stressed at various hearings that he will be willing to defend himself at trial once he is fit to do so, but they say he is unfit to plead under English law and his ''prognosis is not certain''.
The ruling followed a hearing at the High Court in 2013. Those proceedings took place after an earlier decision that there were outstanding legal issues which needed to be decided.
In July 2013 chief magistrate Howard Riddle ruled at Westminster Magistrates' Court that Dewani should be extradited and rejected his attempt to stay in the UK for further hospital treatment.
He said Dewani was not fit to plead or stand trial at present, but there was evidence that he would receive the care he needed in South Africa.
Judge Riddle originally gave the go-ahead to Dewani's extradition in 2011 but had to reconsider the position after the High Court later allowed an appeal.
The High Court proceedings centred on two legal issues - the first relating to Dewani's status as "an accused person", and the second concerning whether it would be "unjust and oppressive" to extradite him "regardless of the prognosis" of his mental condition.
The judges were asked to decide whether a person who is unfit to plead is "an accused" for the purpose of the Extradition Act 2003 "if he is being extradited in circumstances where he may remain unfit to plead".
They were also asked to rule on whether it was "unjust or oppressive to extradite a person who is agreed at the time of the determination to be unfit, whatever the prognosis".
So far three men have been convicted over Mrs Dewani's death.
South African Xolile Mngeni was convicted of premeditated murder for shooting her. Prosecutors claimed he was a hitman hired by Dewani to kill his wife, which Dewani has consistently denied.
Taxi driver Zola Tongo was jailed for 18 years after he admitted his part in the killing and another accomplice, Mziwamadoda Qwabe, also pleaded guilty to murder and was handed a 25-year prison sentence.
Dewani's family have said that he remains committed to returning to South Africa "when his health would permit a full trial and when appropriate protections are in place for his health and safety".
A lawyer for the South African government said it was "delighted" with the court's ruling and expected it would be able to give the undertaking, but needed 14 days "for final clarification".

Dave Lee Travis trial: former personal assistant says sex predator claims 'completely untrue'
Claims that veteran DJ Dave Lee Travis was seen as a sexual predator while working at a commercial radio station are ''completely untrue'', a former personal assistant has told his trial.
Gemma Nurden described Travis, known as DLT, as a ''lovely person''.
''When Dave met people, he'd give them a big sort of bear hug,'' she told jurors.
''He just sort of would always put his arms around people but not in a seedy way or anything - just in a friendly way.''
Travis, now 68, is on trial accused of indecently assaulting 10 women and sexually assaulting another in incidents dating back to 1976 and the height of his fame.

28 Jan 2014He denies all the charges.
Giving evidence, Ms Nurden, who said she worked for Travis from September 1992 to 2002, was asked about the period when he worked at Chiltern Radio, where he is alleged to have inappropriately touched three female colleagues.
Asked by Stephen Vullo, for the defence, if the defendant was known by his colleagues as a ''determined sexual predator'' as the trial has previously heard, Ms Nurden said: ''That's completely untrue.
''I never saw anything to make me think that at all.''
Asked to describe what Travis was like in her view, the witness told jurors at London's Southwark Crown Court: ''He's great fun.
''He was a very sort of larger-than-life character. He would chat to anybody.
''He wasn't sort of like a big superstar that wouldn't talk to a doorman or anything like that, and just a lovely person.''
Asked if she saw or heard anything to suggest Travis ever acted inappropriately with female staff at the radio station, Ms Nurden, who said she accompanied him to his show every day, told jurors: ''No.''
The witness said she began working for the former BBC Radio 1 presenter for a few days a week after his wife Marianne had an operation, carrying out household tasks for the couple and feeding their chickens and pigs.
She became his PA a year later when he left the BBC and began working in commercial radio.
Ms Nurden told jurors she was not aware of any of the women at Chiltern Radio ever accusing him of assaulting them and there was never an ''atmosphere'' at the station because of him.
When asked whether she noticed the smell of the defendant's ''pungent aftershave'' as he walked in the room - as other witnesses have said - Travis gave a loud sigh in the dock as Ms Nurden said: ''Yes.''
Travis - on trial under his birth name David Griffin - denies 13 indecent assaults between 1976 and 2003 and one sexual assault in 2008.
The charges relate to allegations from when he was working as a BBC DJ, as a broadcaster with Classic Gold radio, while appearing on Top Of The Pops and when starring in panto.

Jude Law 'tried to manipulate News of the World story to look like Sienna Miller cheated first'
Actor Jude Law tried to manipulate a News of the World story about his girlfriend Sienna Miller's affair with Bond star Daniel Craig to make it appear that ''she cheated first'', it was claimed today.
A PR source asked the paper to ''deliberately backdate'', claiming the request was effectively from Law, who had had a fling with a nanny, the hacking trial heard.
The disclosure came as former editor Andy Coulson's lawyer Timothy Langdale QC cross examined self confessed NotW hacker Dan Evans on the fifth day of his evidence.
Evans claims his former editor knew about his hacking activities and that part of the Sienna story was produced from a hacked message to Craig from Law confronting him about the affair.
Transcripts from interviews read to the court exposed information from the sources described as One and Two.

Constance Briscoe trial jury discharged after failing to reach verdict
The jury trying part-time judge Constance Briscoe over charges that she lied to police investigating the Chris Huhne speeding points case has been discharged after failing to reach verdicts.
Briscoe, a 56-year-old barrister, from Clapham, south west London, denies three counts of intending to pervert the course of justice.
The jury of six women and five men had been deliberating since Wednesday at Southwark Crown Court but were discharged after failing to reach verdicts on any counts.
Briscoe is accused of providing police with two inaccurate statements about her role as an intermediary between then Energy Secretary Chris Huhne's estranged wife Vicky Pryce and reporters in revealing details of the speeding points saga.
She is also accused of producing an altered copy of a statement and then deliberately getting a document expert to view the wrong version of the statement.

Sienna: my brief encounter with Daniel Craig
Sienna Miller has denied that her affair with Daniel Craig, the James Bond actor, was a “relationship”, describing it instead as a “very brief encounter”.
Giving evidence in the phone hacking trial via videolink from New Orleans, where the actress is involved in a new film, Miss Miller described Mr Craig as “her very best friend”, but insisted that reports of a message in which she said she loved him had been “misconstrued”.
Bringing a touch of glamour to the proceedings at the Old Bailey, Miss Miller, who was flanked by an FBI agent, appeared five days after Jude Law, her ex-boyfriend, gave evidence in person.
Jurors were told that the News of the World exposed her affair with Mr Craig after Dan Evans, a reporter, hacked into the actor’s voicemail in 2005.
Mr Evans overheard a message from the 32-year-old actress, in which it is claimed that she said: “Hi, it’s me. I can’t talk I’m at the Groucho

Andy Murray and Roger Federer help Davis Cup recover some of its lost sparkle
After years of head-scratching, the International Tennis Federation has come up with some new-look branding in the hope of revitalising the Davis Cup brand.
The venerable team competition is now appearing on posters as “the World Cup of tennis”, while a promotion entitled “Show Your Colours” is using each team’s flags as a rallying point for fans.
A desperate and underpowered attempt to regain a little of the cup’s lost limelight?
Time will tell, but let us not be too negative. This was already promising to be a good weekend for the competition before a ball had been hit.
For one thing, the return of Andy Murray and Great Britain to the world group has added significantly to its historical resonance.

26 Jan 2014Their first-round tie against the US, which started on Friday night when Murray faced Donald Young at San Diego’s Petco Park, is a rematch of the first Davis Cup tie from Boston in 1900, which the hosts won 3-0.
The British team have underperformed for so long that a victory here would be their first in the world group since 1986.
And yet, only eight years before that, John Lloyd and Buster Mottram faced John McEnroe and his fellow Americans in another epic: the 1978 final at Palm Springs.
Perhaps it is jingoistic to suggest that the resurgence of Great Britain – which has been powered by some inspired selections by team captain Leon Smith and an array of strong doubles players – benefits the whole competition.
But everyone loves to beat the Brits, in any sport. It is just that, in tennis, those victories are slightly less easy to come by than they used to be.
Meanwhile, Switzerland’s attempt to land a first Davis Cup title has been boosted by Roger Federer’s decision to participate in the first match of the year.
Normally, Federer leaves Stan Wawrinka – the Australian Open champion – in charge and rides in at the last gasp to head off relegation in the September play-off.
This year, though, Federer seems to have been inspired by the possibility of actually winning the competition.
And it is hard to see who might stop the Swiss champions if both stay fit and available throughout the season.
Until yesterday, the last nation to combine two individual grand slam winners was Spain, which brought together Rafael Nadal and Juan Carlos Ferrero in 2005.
After Nadal came within a match of adding a 14th grand slam title to his tally in Australia a week ago, it is easy to see why Federer might want to shore up the only gap in his otherwise impeccable CV: the lack of a Davis Cup title (Nadal, by comparison, has four.)
Success in the final in 10 months’ time would certainly add another wrinkle to the ongoing “greatest of all time” debate.
But whatever Federer’s motivations, it was encouraging to see the most lauded figure in the sport return to the fray against Serbia on Friday, easing past Ilija Bozoljac in straight sets in Novi Sad.
The only shame is that he will not be playing Novak Djokovic on Sunday, for the world No2 has opted for a skiing trip to his childhood home of Kopaonik instead.
Here we see the chief difficulty of team competitions in men’s tennis.
For the best part of a decade, the sport’s narrative has revolved around the crunching collisions between the super-elite in the final stages of grand slams.
Yet when was the last time this happened in the Davis Cup?
The same problem applies to the proposed International Tennis Premier League, a plan to create star-studded teams based in four Asian cities, which is being assembled by former doubles champion Mahesh Bhupathi.
You could see Murray or Djokovic agreeing to hang out in Singapore or Kuala Lumpur for a couple of weeks in December; they would be doing warm-weather training somewhere else at that time of the year anyway.
But it is hard to see them clocking up any extra miles by making the journeys to away trips, which would forestall the tastiest match-ups.
The variety and passion of the Davis Cup make it an important cog in the calendar, even now. Y
et until the big names start to “show their colours” more often, the competition will continue to struggle for airtime.

Andy Murray gets Great Britain off to a smooth start against USA in the Davis Cup
Andy Murray played hardball in the baseball stadium on Friday night, as he got Great Britain off to the smoothest of starts in this intriguing Davis Cup tie.
At Petco Park, the home of the San Diego Padres, Murray demolished Donald Young of the USA in just 98 minutes: 6-1, 6-2, 6-3.
Murray had lost to Young before, in one of his spring slumps after the Australian Open, but there was little chance of a repeat here once he had found his feet on a slippery but slow-paced clay court.
The match was competitive for around five minutes, which was about as long as it took Murray to survive a tense opening service game that featured two deuces. After that, he cranked up his forehand and started playing some high-level tennis.
For a man who has never been comfortable on clay courts in the past, it was an encouraging display. Realistically, Great Britain's prospects of winning this tie depend on Murray being able to deliver three points – one of them with the help of Colin Fleming in today's doubles.

26 Jan 2014It is thus crucial for Britain's greatest asset to conserve energy over the weekend, and yesterday he was magnificently economical. Young could not handle Murray's accuracy and authority, despite enthusiastic support from the 4,000-odd fans at Petco Park and pep talks from his team captain Jim Courier, whose natty grey suit made him resemble one of the Premier League's more elegant continental managers.
A left-hander ranked No. 79 in the world, Young is perhaps not best suited to playing on a surface as slow as this one. The USA have not hosted a home tie on clay for more than 20 years, but they had hoped to have John Isner – the world No. 13 and a proficient dirtballer – to lead their team.
Unfortunately Isner was ruled out by an ankle injury and they have ended up with Sam Querrey – who was due to face British No. 2 James Ward in the second match yesterday – plus the erratic and unpredictable Young. As a man who likes to come forward, and has more touch in his hands than power in his groundstrokes, Young would surely have preferred a slick hard court.
It is possible that Young could end up playing a decisive anchor leg in this tie on Sunday afternoon, when it will be his turn to face Ward. The Briton is ranked 96 places below him but he will have observed Young's tendency to throw in a duff game amid some bold stroke play. It took the
American until midway through the third set to even earn a break point, and then he was unable to convert.
Despite Murray's fine start, he and the British team have not been delighted with the quality of a court that was laid only a couple of weeks ago. Clay courts normally take at least a year to bed down, so creating one from scratch is never quite the same as going out to play at Monte Carlo or Roland Garros.
The top layer of granules is so loose that the ballboys were struggling to keep their footing. Murray and Young were much steadier, having spent the past week getting the hang of it, and indeed Murray moved – and slid – with impressive control and speed. But he did call the chair umpire, Henrik Molina, down to look at a dicey patch late in the first set.
Meanwhile, Roger Federer's surprise decision to play in Switzerland's first-round tie in Novi Sad, Serbia's second city, was rewarded yesterday with a straight-sets victory over Ilija Bozoljac. The only shame is that he will not be playing Novak Djokovic on Sunday, for the world No. 2 has opted for a skiing trip to his childhood home of Kopaonik instead.
It is not common to see Federer involved in the Davis Cup at this early stage of the season. Normally he leaves his old mate Stan Wawrinka in charge and rides in at the last gasp to head off relegation in the
September play-off. But Wawrinka's recent flowering must have encouraged him to think that Switzerland could lift the Cup this year for the first time in their history.

Andy Murray aims to deliver for Great Britain in Davis Cup
When Andy Murray goes out to face the USA's Donald Young tonight, in the opening rubber of a fascinating Davis Cup tie, he will be playing at the most quintessentially American venue you could imagine: a 40,000-seater baseball ground entitled Petco Park.
Murray – who caused a short-lived media storm on Wednesday with a fake wedding announcement – is often described as left-field, but has never actually played there before. Mind you, the whole experience of contesting a world group match will be a novelty for a British team who have not scored a victory at this elite level for almost 30 years.
Murray's match against Young is due to start at 7pm GMT at this stadium within a stadium. Temporary stands have been set up to the west of the court, reducing capacity to a cosy 8,000, while the east side is overlooked by the soaring bleachers frequented by fans of the San Diego Padres. It might sound like a dog's breakfast, but the US Tennis Association should actually be commended for creating a dramatic and unusual venue.
So what of the tennis? The British team's prospects are certainly stronger than they were 24 hours ago, given that John Isner, the world No 13, has been ruled out with an ankle injury.
"We've got a chance of winning this match even though the US probably go in as strong favourites," said Murray admitted yesterday, after attending the draw ceremony at Balboa Park, adjacent to San Diego's world-famous zoo.

17 Nov 2013In all probability, Murray will still have to win both his singles matches – as well as tomorrow's doubles encounter with the world-leading Bryan brothers – if Great Britain are to progress to the quarter-final stage of the competition in April.
On the face of things, though, the absence of Isner would seem to lighten his load. The biggest concern for Britain's team captain Leon Smith was that Murray would become embroiled in a series of exhausting four- or five-set matches – a particular worry in the light of his painstaking return from back surgery in September.
Of course, Murray could still find it difficult against Young – a left-hander ranked No. 79 – in tonight's opening match, especially on the slippery clay court that seems to have been specifically prepared to make him uncomfortable. But at least it is easier to return serve against Young – a relatively diminutive tennis player at under 6ft tall – than it would have been against the 6ft 9in Isner.
